The ‘Jurassic Park’ franchise has long become something greater than just a series of films about dinosaurs. It is a true cultural phenomenon that unites two large-scale sagas and has shaped several generations of moviegoers. Ever since Steven Spielberg introduced the first film to the world, this universe has continued to expand far beyond the big screen — even into animated spin-offs.
Yet for many viewers, the true magic of the series has always been tied to the names of Laura Dern, Sam Neill, and Jeff Goldblum. Their triumphant return in Jurassic World: Dominion (2022) was a real gift for fans, but it also gave the actors a reason to reassess their characters’ past.
During the promotional campaign for Jurassic World: Dominion, Sam Neill and Laura Dern shared reflections that made them look at the duo of Dr. Alan Grant and Ellie Sattler from a completely different angle. As it turns out, time has changed not only their appearance but also their perception of social norms that once seemed natural and unquestionable in the early 1990s.

Sam Neill, who nearly lost the role of Grant to another Hollywood star, admitted that for a long time he saw nothing unusual in being twenty years older than his on-screen partner. At the time of the original film’s production, such an age gap was considered perfectly acceptable for leading characters.
The realization came unexpectedly when the actor came across a magazine article with an ironic headline along the lines of “Old Men and Ladies.” The piece discussed figures like Harrison Ford and Sean Connery, whose ages significantly exceeded those of their female co-stars. Seeing his own name on that list genuinely surprised Neill.
Laura Dern, who was only 23 when she starred in Spielberg’s film, now shares her colleague’s perspective. Looking back three decades later, she admits that the romantic storyline between their characters now feels “completely inappropriate” to her given the age difference. Nevertheless, the actress notes that at the time of filming, Ellie’s feelings for Alan caused her no internal conflict. According to her, only today’s era — marked by a reassessment of patriarchal norms — has allowed her to fully grasp how significant that age gap was.

Despite these reflections, their reunion on set years later became a truly joyful experience for the actors. The age difference remained the same, but their professional chemistry and mutual respect only grew stronger. As Laura Dern noted, returning to these roles and reconnecting with old friends became a remarkable journey into the past — one that allowed them not only to conclude their characters’ story but also to better understand themselves.
