When Even the Actors Didn’t Know: How ‘Bridget Jones’s Baby’ Was Filmed

Bridget Jones’s Baby is the third film about the most famous British singleton, brilliantly portrayed by Renée Zellweger. This time, Bridget’s life is not only full of adventures but also surprises: now in her forties, she finds herself pregnant without knowing which of two men — Mark Darcy or Jack Qwant — is the father. This mystery becomes the central thread of the entire plot.

After the events of the first two films, Bridget enters a new stage of her life alone. Mark Darcy, still played by Colin Firth, remains somewhere nearby, but their relationship is far from perfect. Daniel Cleaver does not appear this time — Hugh Grant declined to return to the role. Because of this, the charming Jack Qwant, played by Patrick Dempsey, was introduced into the story.

A series of chance encounters, emotional ups and downs, and two nights spent “at the wrong place and the wrong time” lead Bridget to news that turns her life upside down: she is expecting a baby but has no idea who the father is. Both men become entangled in the story of her future motherhood, while Bridget herself is swept into a whirlpool of doubts, anxieties, and unexpected support.

The film’s main intrigue is the question every viewer asks: Darcy or Qwant? To ensure that no one leaked the answer, the producers made an unusual decision — they had the actors shoot several alternate endings without telling them which one would be used in the final cut.

“This is simply brilliant. None of the actors know who Bridget’s baby’s father is or whom she chooses as her boyfriend. The idea is to keep us all in the dark until the premiere,” Zellweger remarked. In this way, the secret of who the father remained carefully protected, and audiences kept guessing right along with Bridget until the very last moment.
