Why did Michelle Pfeiffer turn down a role in ‘The Silence of the Lambs’?

Michelle Pfeiffer was nominated for the Academy Award three times and is considered one of the most prominent actresses of her generation. She received a nomination for her work in ‘Dangerous Liaisons’, and then twice for Best Actress for her performances in ‘The Fabulous Baker Boys’ and ‘Love Field’. However, there was a project in her career that could have brought her the coveted Oscar — but she chose to walk away from it.

The project in question was the famous thriller The Silence of the Lambs. Director Jonathan Demme considered Pfeiffer for the role of young FBI trainee Clarice Starling. The actress had previously worked with him on the comedy Married to the Mob. This time, however, the collaboration did not happen, as Pfeiffer declined the role.

The part of Clarice eventually went to Jodie Foster, and the choice proved triumphant. Foster won the Academy Award for Best Actress, while the film itself became the biggest winner of the ceremony, taking home top honors including Best Picture.

Later, Pfeiffer explained her decision in an interview. She said that while the script made a strong impression on her, it also raised serious concerns. “I had reservations about The Silence of the Lambs. There was too much evil in it,” the actress admitted. She added that what she regrets most is not missing out on the role but not having the chance to work again with Jonathan Demme. Still, she found the story too dark.

What particularly troubled her was the film’s ending. In the final scenes, the brilliant and terrifying psychiatrist-cannibal Hannibal Lecter, portrayed by Anthony Hopkins, escapes custody and begins pursuing Dr. Frederick Chilton, played by Anthony Heald. The ending suggests that Lecter intends to kill and eat his enemy. “Evil won in the end. I was uncomfortable with that. I didn’t want to put that out into the world,” Pfeiffer said.

While this dark conclusion resonated with the Academy, the actress chose to stay away from it. She was uncomfortable being part of a project where, in her view, evil left such a powerful aftertaste. In the end, the film became one of the most iconic thrillers in cinema history and won five major Academy Awards.
