Daryl Hannah is one of the most recognizable actresses of the 1980s, whose career reflects the contradictions of Hollywood, its rigid rules, and the power of personal choice. After a meteoric rise and a string of iconic roles, her path took a sharp turn — and proved far more complicated than it might seem at first glance. How did Daryl Hannah’s personal life and career unfold?
Daryl Christine Hannah was born on December 3, 1960, in Chicago, to a father who owned a barge company and a mother who worked as a producer. After her parents divorced, she and her siblings were raised by their mother. Hannah’s path to fame was far from easy. From an early age, she struggled with extreme shyness and was later diagnosed with autism — at a time when such a diagnosis often felt like a sentence to social isolation. No one could have predicted that she would become a Hollywood star. “I didn’t socialize and didn’t behave like other children,” she later recalled.

Her situation became even more complicated when her mother married millionaire Jerrold Wexler. Because of her stepfather’s prominence, nine-year-old Daryl was escorted to school by bodyguards, which only deepened her sense of isolation. Psychologists even suggested placing her in a psychiatric clinic, but her mother made a decisive choice: she took her daughter to the Caribbean for a year. The change of environment gave the future actress the confidence she needed.
After returning, Hannah attended the prestigious Francis W. Parker School in Chicago, played soccer, and later enrolled at the University of Southern California, where she studied ballet and acting.
Rise to fame

Blade Runner
Hannah made her film debut at 17 in The Fury by Brian De Palma, but true fame came in 1982. At her audition for Blade Runner, she wore a wig made of yak wool and styled her eyebrows with putty, inspired by Nosferatu. “I saw the other contenders — they were beautiful, and I felt completely unattractive,” she admitted. Yet it was precisely this unconventional approach that impressed the director.
This was followed by the legendary Splash. Her role as the mermaid Madison brought Hannah worldwide fame. The film became a blockbuster, though the shoot was physically demanding: a complex costume, long hours in the water, and near-total immobility between takes. The heavy tail made it impossible for her to walk, and Tom Hanks reportedly had to feed her French fries by hand while a crane moved her around the set. Despite the challenges, the film’s success opened the door to a series of leading roles.

Throughout the decade, she appeared in films such as The Pope of Greenwich Village, Legal Eagles, Roxanne, Wall Street, High Spirits, and Steel Magnolias.
Leaving the spotlight
In the 1990s, Hannah’s career began to fade. Hollywood proved unforgiving when it came to age, and she was bluntly told she was “too old” for compelling roles. By the early 2000s, she had largely stepped away from mainstream cinema, focusing instead on theater and independent projects. Her return came thanks to Quentin Tarantino, who cast her in Kill Bill. Her portrayal of the one-eyed assassin Elle Driver reminded audiences of her charisma, though it did not restart her major Hollywood career.

Kill Bill: Volume 2
During this period, Hannah also encountered the darker side of the industry. While promoting Kill Bill: Volume 2, she had a disturbing encounter with producer Harvey Weinstein. The conflict had begun years earlier at the Cannes Film Festival, where she was forced to hide in a dressing room to avoid his persistent knocking on her hotel door. He was reportedly furious that she had ignored a planned meeting and his calls.
The confrontation escalated at the Italian premiere of Kill Bill: Volume 2. Weinstein somehow obtained a duplicate key to the hotel room Hannah shared with her makeup artist. According to her, he burst in “like a raging bull,” charging from the living room straight into the bedroom. Only the presence of a third person prevented the situation from becoming even worse. “It was truly frightening,” she later said.
Life beyond Hollywood
Today, 65-year-old Daryl Hannah has found her true calling not under the spotlight, but in protecting the planet. She has continued to appear in independent films and series, including the drama Sense8, but her main focus has become environmental activism. She has been arrested multiple times during protests, spoken out against the Keystone pipeline and climate change denial, and founded the Sustainable Biodiesel Alliance.
